Post-Fossil Transition (HIAP & Mustarinda)
A rapid transition from the infrastructure and cultural practices reliant on fossil energy sources towards post-fossil solutions is essential in order to slow down climate change and reach the goals of The Paris Agreement. The post-fossil transition is a major cultural paradigm shift cutting through all spheres of life.
The Post-Fossil Project has been the beginning of a fundamental shift in HIAPs practises around the focus topics Travel, Food and Energy.

The three year collaborative project of Mustarinda and HIAP is a platform for mapping out interests and concerns together, forming alliances, creating a toolbox for a better future and finding ways to share the post-fossil practices and putting them into action on a daily basis. The goal is to lower greenhouse gas emissions caused by the artist residencies and to explore the challenges related to renewable energy sources within the activities of cultural organisations. The project challenges Finnish and international art institutions to prepare for the post-fossil future. The central themes of the project are Travel, Food and Energy.
The initiative consists of three parts:
- Adjusting the activities of the organisations to post-fossil transition
- Thematic residencies and events
- Sharing the practices that enable the transition with other cultural organisations
The partnership between HIAP and Mustarinda is based on the 5-year Frontiers in Retreat project (2013-2018) which focused on the intersection of ecological discourses and contemporary art practices. For HIAP the Post-Fossil Transition project represents a significant step for HIAP towards more sustainable ways of operating. It is both a shared learning process and a slow organisational metamorphosis.
For the year 2020 Frame Contemporary Art Finland, IHME Helsinki, HIAP, and Mustarinda – have hired a shared eco-coordinator to reduce their climate emissions. Saara Korpela has studied environmental protection, water and waste management, and sustainable development. She will identify the composition of the organisations atmospheric emissions, seek less-impactful alternatives and promote sustainable operating models.
