Safer Space Guidelines
Last updated: June 2025
HIAP Helsinki International Artist Programme is committed to creating respectful environments for those involved in our activities.
This policy intends to ensure that we can learn, share, grow and contribute in spaces where we each experience respect, dignity and safety.
We do not tolerate racism, ageism, xenophobia, religious discrimination, sexism, transphobia, ableism, class discrimination or comments on people’s bodies. We do not view ignorance or attempts at humour as excuses for unacceptable behaviour.
All of us, including staff, residents, visitors and users of our facilities and spaces, work together to make HIAP a safer place. We do this by following these principles:
Let’s not make assumptions of people’s identities, gender, pronouns, sexual orientation, background, body or experiences. Avoid invasive personal questions. Everyone has the right to share what they feel is necessary and meaningful about themselves.
Let’s not use offensive or oppressive language. Being precise about language is a matter of promoting a safer space.
Let’s treat each other with respect and dignity, including respecting people’s personal, physical and emotional boundaries. Seek consent before touching or taking pictures.
Let’s be aware of our own prejudices and privileges and respond to constructive criticism by correcting our behaviour.
Nobody is perfect and we are bound to fail occasionally. Let’s encourage each other to take responsibility for our words, actions and missteps.
If a situation feels uncomfortable and / or you witness harassment, abuse or discrimination please raise this issue with the event organisers during the event. You can also provide feedback before, during and after events through this anonymous feedback form or by emailing feedback@hiap.fi
With thanks to ANTI Festival, the Anti-Racist Forum and Art School MAA whose Safer Spaces Policies influenced and guided the creation of ours.
