Serhii Varlamov

Serhii Varlamov is a Ukrainian artist and curator based in Helsinki. In his practice, he examines human treatment of and ways of seeing other species, and how these perspectives influence relationships between people of different cultural backgrounds or social groups, as well as how their surroundings shape their views of the world. His main mediums are textile and multimedia installation.

In 2023, Serhii and his team received year-long funding from the KONE Foundation for the project «Life Goes On – Chronicles of the Russo-Ukrainian War». During years 2024 -2025 he worked as a curator at the Taidetila Muijala art residency.

During my residency, I plan to frame my research and create several new textile works. My goal is to begin working with new materials and to shift from two-dimensional imagery toward more sculptural mediums. Additionally, I will combine my research in art history with socio-cultural theory, which I have been studying over the past few years, in order to establish a more articulated vision and narrative. This will lay a stronger foundation for my artistic and curatorial practice, circling around the question of what it means to live in a transitional time such as the one we witnessing today.

Serhii Varlamov’s residency at Nelimarkka Museum Residency is realised in the context of the Ukraine Solidarity Residencies programme. The current partners of the programme are AARK, Art Centre Salmela, Fairres, Goethe-Institut Finnland, HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme, Nelimarkka Museum, Pro Artibus, The Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation, The Finnish Darkroom Association, The Finnish Illustration Association Kuvittajat, Vantaa Artist Association, and Värtsilä Art House Residency.
