Sarah Rodigari

Sarah Rodigari makes text-based performances, films and installations which address the social and political potential of art. Her practice employs dialogical methodologies producing collective commentaries that work as exhibits of social discourse as well as capsule demonstrations of the self-formed in dialogue. Continually ‘off-script’, through strategies of humility, absurdity and contradiction, Rodigari’s ‘wrong reading’ elaborates a gap between gestures and their categorisation, the common sense that prevails, or the ‘script’ – and the potential for this script to be otherwise.

Commissioned works include: Sydney Opera House, Art Gallery of Western Australia, ‘The National: New Australian Art’, Monash University Museum of Art, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Biennale of Sydney, Melbourne Public Art Biennial, Poetry Project, (New York City), Artspace and, SOMA Gallery (Mexico City). Sarah is a Lecturer in Sculpture and Spatial Practice at the Australian National University and is a member of the collective Field Theory.

At HIAP, I will research the artist’s contract, value systems and ‘what matters’ in relation to art institutions, art making, and the labour conditions experienced within. My research will take place alongside a series of encounters with artists, arts workers, and the expanded art community across Helsinki. I will be working across the mediums of text, video and performance.

The residency is realised with the support of The Australia Council for the Arts.
