Onni Alanko

Onni Alanko is a visual artist working primarily with painting. His work draws from urban observations, exploring how spaces are built, worn, and transformed, and how humans and nature interact in these processes.

Rather than depicting specific views, his paintings invite viewers to move through spaces where the concrete and the intangible coexist. Cityscapes blend with memory, experience, and association, as Alanko constructs space while simultaneously dissolving its boundaries—emphasizing the layered, ever-changing nature of the urban environment.

For Alanko, painting is a way to explore and express spatial experience.

I’m interested in how my daily life on the island begins to shape my artistic practice. My work is rooted in everyday observations—especially those made on my way to the studio. I reflect on how these perceptions evolve as my surroundings, routes, nature, rhythm, and history shift.

I aim to extend spatiality from the surface of the painting into the exhibition space itself. I’m moving toward a more sculptural expression while staying grounded in painting traditions. I’m particularly drawn to defining space, directing the viewer’s movement, and exploring how these elements shape spatial experience.
