Make or Break

Make or Break devise and experiment with process-based projects that are co-authored with communities they are invited into. Projects have included creating experimental economies and temporary currencies; caring for civic spaces and the non-human; celebrating the labour of strangers; prototyping for future worlds; writing speculative fiction and facilitating conversations as collective research. Make or Break is Rebecca Gallo and Connie Anthes, who work and live on the stolen lands of the Gadigal, Bidjigal and Burramattagal people in Sydney, Australia.

As we collectively navigate climate catastrophe, Covid isolation, and other forms of precarity, Make or Break will be researching and developing new models for collaborative art projects and practices that can extend beyond one human lifetime. Using slow time and sustainment as lenses through which to view our practice, this residency will bring together ongoing interests in material time, circular economies, waged/unwaged labour and the non-human as a co-author of our projects. We will connect with Helsinki-based artists, collectives and organisations for discussion and to share and co-develop ideas and possibilities.

The residency is realised with the support of The Australia Council for the Arts.
