Madeleine Collie
Madeleine Collie is a curator, writer, and researcher whose work engages plants, poetics, and ecological relations within contemporary art. She founded the Food Art Research Network in 2020, and she is co-editor of Earth Ethics: Art Institutions and Regenerative Practices (Monash University Publishing, 2025) and Tastes of Justice (Routledge, 2025). She is currently a guest curator at Kin Museum, Sápmi. Previously she led The Ash Project (2016-2019) a transdisciplinary public art collaboration to memorialise the death of a species of tree, with Kent Downs, Whitstable Biennale, Forest Research and Turner Contemporary.
During my time at HIAP I am following plants, developing fermentation and sound projects and working on an ongoing research correspondence and publication titled Follow the Plants, in a dialogue with Helsinki based curator Yvonne Billimore and eighteen artists which explores how plants make worlds, move and form relations in different contexts. This project, which is supported by Creative Australia, Frame and Bioart Society, will be presented as a publication and symposium in 2026. Alongside this research I hope to start work on a film essay that attends to the political histories of trees on Suomenlinna.
The residency is realised with the support of Creative Australia.
