Lena Violetta Leitner

Lena Violetta Leitner completed her studies in Digital Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2017 with the founding of the Integration Center for Migrated Plants (IZMP). Since then she has been fascinated by plants and their socio-political dimension – the connections between science, language and society are addressed in her work with irony, humor and speculative fabulation.

Lena Violetta Leitner invents, intervenes and cooperates. Her works are mostly created through intensive research and close exchange with artists, designers and scientists, resulting in participatory installations, but also performances with plants, electronics and text.

With her collective DTAFA she received an Ö1 – Reparatur der Zukunft award. In 2022 she was awarded the Start Scholarship for media art by BMKÖS and in 2023 the Acquisition Award by the Province of Styria.

PPS Suomenlinna – The Para(rt)sitic Protection Society Suomenlinna presents: How to become an Island on an Island?

For my residency at Suomenlinna I am opening an office for the Para(rt)sitic Protection Society- PPS Suomenlinna.

The PPS researches the history of parasitism and engages itself as an agency for unwanted species. Together with the local community – the human and non-human inhabitants of the island, the archives, artists and scientists, we will learn forms of parasitism from invisible worms in the sea, strangling plants on the island or stones on the borders. We are inspired by parasitic strategies of surviving to empower us.

Lena Violetta Leitner’s residency is realised in collaboration with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport (BMKOES).
