Katie Watchorn
Katie Watchorn lives between Amsterdam and Ireland. She holds a BA from The National College of Art and Design, and recently completed a two year residency at De Ateliers, Amsterdam.
Katie’s practice expands from the formal foundations of sculpture to explore the shifting relations between rural and urban life, labour, and technology. Working with industrial and agricultural materials, she examines how the body—both human and animal—exists within systems of production, regulation, and care. Her work is grounded in the material and sensory textures of her rural upbringing while attentive to the infrastructural logics of contemporary urban living.
At HIAP, I am particularly interested in researching heat and energy production, exploring various sources of thermal energy. I seek to deepen my investigation into the subtle, often invisible presence of the body in space. What does it mean to translate the outside world into a space that feels both connected and immersive? Research into Finland’s rich history of heat production in response to its harsh winters will be an essential part of this inquiry, providing context for how heat functions not only as a resource but as an integral element of human experience within the built environment.
