Hayden Ryan

Hayden is an Aboriginal scholar and spatial sound artist of Yuin descent currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. His work centres Indigenous sonic and spatial practice through articulating the inextricability of land, body sound and culture within First Nations knowledge systems.

Having graduated from NYU’s Music Technology Masters program, Hayden’s sound practice is largely influenced by acoustic techniques, digital signal processing and spatial audio technologies – readapting technical approaches to explore Aboriginal identity and violent colonial histories through sound.

Hayden is currently a Research Fellow at RMIT University, where he is completing a PhD in Design.

During Hayden’s HIAP residency, Hayden is interested in investigating ‘spatial intersubjectivity’ within Sámi cultural practices – focusing on how environmental acoustics and land influence the way Indigenous people establish culture.
