Fanny Varjo (b. 1995) is a sculptor based in Helsinki. Varjo works with various materials, such as steel, wood, hair, cast metals, glass and combines them together. Sometimes the works are made entirely of ceramics.
Her artistic practice is driven by an interest in corporeality and alienation. The themes of her work are rising from historical stories, beliefs and myths, and their continuous link to the present. She graduated with an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki in 2025.
I’m excited to spend a total of one year working at HIAP. During the residency, I will delve into a new body of work exploring corporeality and emotional experience while starting to develop a new installation consisting of several multi-material sculptures. My practice moves across different materials and techniques allowing each piece to evolve through the process. I will begin the residency by 3D modelling and printing forms to create moulds for aluminium casting.
My work is driven by an interest in creating tensions between materials and exploring how these relationships can evoke physical, emotional, and symbolic responses.
