Eriko Mukai

Eriko Mukai creates performance works based on phenomena existing in nature and society. She dismantles images attached to different phenomena and reconstructs their mechanisms as systems consisting of objects and actions. She then abstracts and operates the resulting three-dimensionalized devices. However, within this reconstructed performance, there is no direct indication of what the motif is. How will the audience respond and what kind of attitude will they take with limited information in front of unknown objects? Eriko’s work approaches such issues that create a parallelism to our daily life in society.

During my residency in Helsinki, I will create the “Approach” series, a performance that uses structures that visualize social systems. I will also research the mechanisms related to labor and consumption, such as those found in supermarkets.—Eriko
