ENERGY PRINCIPLES
1. USE LESS ENERGY
HIAP has installed a smart heating system in the Suomenlinna studio buildings.
After three years of negotiation with the governing body of Suomenlinna smart thermostats have been installed in the Suomenlinna Studios which consist of five studio apartments and four guest rooms. The smart thermostats predict heating needs in relation to weather forecast, heat according to thermal responses of each room, keep a target room temperature and heat according to use.
HIAP encourages artists in residence to be conscious of their energy consumption and provides energy saving recommendations.
HIAP provides a list of recommendations for sustainable practises and energy saving in the HIAP studios and laundry rooms.
2. SUPPORT RENEWABLE ENERGY
HIAP Suomenlinna has switched to wind power electricity contract
HIAPs Studios, Office and Project space all use electricity created by wind power. HIAP chose wind power because wind is a renewable energy source and because using wind to produce energy has a very low environmental impact as wind turbines in use produce zero carbon emissions.
HIAP is negotiating for renewable electricity contracts at all of its locations
HIAP has three locations, HIAP Suomenlinna, HIAP Cable Factory and Villa Eläintarha. HIAP does not hold the electricity contract in all of these places but is in the process of relaying information with the goal of facilitating changing the type of energy used at all of its sites to renewable energy.
3. RETHINK ENERGY CULTURE
HIAP questions common norms, ideas and practices related to energy use.
For the year 2020 HIAP hired Saara Korpela as Eco-coordinator, she has counted the organizations carbon footprint and given advice on changes to be made at HIAP. Further Electricity and heating changes will be proposed for 2021.
HIAP advocates sustainable energy policies
