HIAP Residency Programme 2019 For Finnish Art Practitioners

The HIAP Residency Programme offers a possibility to work in a stimulating milieu in close contact with the international artist community at HIAP. The programme focuses on visual art but is open for art professionals from other disciplines as well. The programme offers time and space for open-ended research and experimentation, without the requirement to produce finalized pieces of work. The Finnish residents in 2018 are Corinna Helenelund, Egle Oddo, Raimo Saarinen, Antti Salminen and Nestori Syrjälä.

Applications are accepted from: 

  • Artists and other art professionals of Finnish nationality based in Finland or abroad
  • Artists and other art professionals who are based in Finland (Finnish nationality is not required)

HIAP provides the selected residents a space for living and working at the Cable Factory or on the island of Suomenlinna between February – December 2019 free of charge. Via this open call we offer one studio located in Suomenlinna, one studio at the Cable Factory and one guest room in Suomenlinna.

The studio in Suomenlinna is 80 sq meters, furnished, and divided into a working space downstairs and a separate living space with bathroom and kitchenette. The studio in the Cable Factory is 60 sq meters and includes a working and living area with a kitchenette, a sleeping loft and a private bathroom. For images of the HIAP Cable Factory Studios, please take a look at http://hiap.fi/Kaapeli

The guest room is located in Suomenlinna, it is 30 sq meters, furnished and can house up to two persons at a time. There is no separate working space in the guest room. All resident spaces have broadband internet connection. No pets are allowed in the studios or guest rooms.

HIAP residents have access to administrative support and to contacts with local arts professionals and organisations. The residents have a chance to present their work-in-progress in regular Open Studio events. In addition, HIAP Project Space can be used by for meetings, gatherings or for self-organised events. HIAP hosts a weekly internal residency community gathering with occasional special guests.

HIAP works in collaboration with organisations that can offer specific production facilities for artists. An example of these is the Pot Viapori ceramics studio, located next to HIAP Suomenlinna Studios. More information: http://www.hiap.fi/pot-viapori

The deadline for the applications is Thursday, August 9, 2018 (11:59 pm, GMT +2).

The Jury consists of members of HIAP staff and the HIAP Associates group. The selected artist will be notified by the end of August 2018. Please note that we are unfortunately unable to give feedback about individual applications.


APPLICATION GUIDELINES

To apply, applicants must submit the following by using an online application form:

  • Motivation letter
  • Working plan describing the professional activities you plan to undertake during the residency period
  • Short bio and a curriculum vitae
  • Examples of previous work

Please write your application in English. Incomplete applications or applications sent by e-mail without using the online application form will not be taken into consideration.

Please note the following guidelines regarding additional material supporting your application:

  • It is advised that all the supporting material is stored online and can be downloaded via the use of hyperlinks, which are mentioned in the application. Please make sure that the links do not expire before you have received the decision of the Jury.
  • All image / video / sound samples should be stored and shared online. It is advised to use platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc, so that downloading isn’t required to  access the material.

Please note that due to the amount of materials received, we are unable to contact applicants upon receipt of each application, to address individual inquiries regarding submitted proposals, or to comment further upon the selection process.

HIAP Residencies in 2019

In addition to the three Finnish residents selected via this open call, there are going to be approximately 35 international residents at HIAP in 2019, who are selected via invitation or specific open calls arranged with our programme partner organisations. The duration of most HIAP residencies is 3 months. The residencies are divided into three seasons: Spring (March–May), Summer (June–August) and Autumn (September–November).
