Wood Workshop
HIAP’s wood workshop is a shared space for art-related projects. It is an unsupervised workshop, and every user needs to be inducted first.
Getting access takes five steps:
1. Read the guidelines → 2. Book an induction → 3. Attend the induction → 4. Fill in the user form → 5. Start using the workshop
On this page we outline the step by step approach so that you can gain access to the space.
Step 1: Read the workshop guidelines
Read the Workshop Guidelines (PDF)
Before your induction, please read the workshop guidelines. They cover safety rules, what you can and can’t do in the workshop, how to use the table saw and dust collector, and what we expect from every user. Reading them first gives you more time in the induction for questions.
Step 2: Book an induction
Everyone needs to complete an induction with HIAP’s Art Technician before using the workshop, even if you have woodworking experience. Inductions are run regularly in small groups.
To book a place, contact us and we can share with you upcoming induction days.
Step 3: Attend your induction
In the induction, the Art Technician will show you around the workshop and explain how it works. This includes:
- where to find the safety equipment, first aid kits and emergency exits
- how to use the machines, the metal detector and the dust collector safely
- how to log your visits and record any tools you borrow
- where to store your materials and projects.
Please bring any questions you have after reading the guidelines.
Step 4: Fill in the Workshop User Form
After your induction, please fill in the form below. It confirms that you have completed the induction and read the guidelines, and gives us your contact details. You can use the workshop once you’ve submitted it.
Please note that HIAP does not provide insurance for workshop users, so make sure you have your own.
Step 5: Start using the workshop
Once you’ve submitted the form, you can use the workshop on your own. Every time you visit, please:
- write your name and the date in the logbook
- record any tool you take out of the workshop
- replace or pay for any materials and consumables you use
- leave the workshop cleaner than you found it.
Never use the larger machines, including the table saw, when you’re alone in the building.
Step 6: Gain Access
Once the above has all been completed and confirmed, we will share with you details of how to access the building.
The workshop is usually shared by everyone who has been inducted. If you need it to yourself, for example for a large project or for very noisy or dusty work, follow these two steps:
- Agree it with the Art Technician first by emailing with the dates you need and what you’ll be working on.
- Book it on the HIAP resource booking page once your dates are confirmed.
Please don’t book the workshop without agreeing it with the Art Technician first.
