Pia Sandström: Crossing The Water

Crossing the Water, an exhibition of Pia Sandström’s (b. 1969) new work, invites the viewer into a book transformed into a spatial work of art. The audience embarks upon a journey composed of large numbered pages dangling from the ceiling. By opening up the plot in this way, the audience is asked to enter into and develop this strange work of fiction. It is a room with endless possibilities for shifting perspectives and positions.

Thematically, Pia Sandström´s ideas revolve around the concept of memory, tacit knowledge, a wish to share experiences with others, and the life of the heart. Often text-based, they take their point of departure from an interest in social relationships and how environments influence people. It is a stance that opens both emotionally and at the same time welcomes actual participation by the audience. Sandström lives and works in Stockholm. She has also exhibited her work in many international solo and group exhibitions, including at Moderna museet and Kiasma.
