Meet the Curator: Saša Nabergoj

HIAP in collaboration with Frame Visual Art Finland present:

Slovenian curator Saša Nabergoj (b. 1971) is in a curatorial residency at HIAP in September. To meet her you can join us on Wednesday, 17 September at 11 am–1 pm at Frame in Cable Factory.

Saša Nabergoj is an art historian, curator and critic. She works as the Assistant Director of SCCA-Ljubljana, Center for Contemporary Arts (Slovenia) where she is the head of World of Art, School for Curators and Critics of Contemporary Art (since 1998) and Studio 6 (since 2004). She has curated several exhibitions, lectured extensively and edited numerous publications. Her most recent project is the third Port Izmir Triennial of Contemporary Art in Turkey (November 2013–June 2014).

To open up her curatorial thinking and practice, Nabergoj will be telling about PORTIZMIR 3, the International Triennial of Contemporary Art, which she curated in 2014. In sync with her understanding of the exhibition as a place where ‘something happens’ and not just a place where ‘something is represented’, the triennial focused on engaged artistic practices that operate on the fringes of the art world and deal with subjects and apply methodology from the outside world, from outside the ‘ivory tower of art’. Furthermore, the triennial consisted of a variety of formats, so that it turned out to be more like a process rather than a single exhibition. In order to achieve this, a crossover of spaces that are used in-between production, research, representation and education were constructed.

Recently, Nabergoj has been interested in artists who have been involved in scrutinising the notion of medium and contemporaneity. Urging us to go beyond the new media art / contemporary art division and the link to craft, design, etc, Nabergoj would be very interested in meeting artists who are perhaps using “traditional” mediums such as ceramics and graphics in a contemporary/interdisciplinary way. During her residency Nabergoj will be carrying out research into the Finnish art scene, doing studio visits and building relationships with artists and local cultural organisations and art spaces.

Saša Nabergoj’s residency is realised in the context of Helsinki International Curatorial Programme, co-organised by HIAP and Frame Visual Art Finland.
