From the Margins? How artist-led spaces are critical to urban regeneration
Date: Thursday 26 June
Time: 13:00–15:00
Location: Main Auditorium, City of Helsinki Urban Environment Building (Kymp-talo), Työpajankatu 8, 00580 Helsinki
Hosted by HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme and the City of Helsinki
Meet artists, urban planners and cultural organisers who are rethinking the role of artists and artist-led spaces in urban regeneration.
Often working from the periphery, artists have reclaimed disused buildings and invested in overlooked neighbourhoods for generations. Their contributions to reimagining what sustainable urban life can be are critical. But is that always recognised? And how can they be supported without being instrumentalised?
The event will include presentations and a panel discussion, with contributions from:
-
Arvind Ramachandran (City of Helsinki)
- Mari Männistö (City of Helsinki)
-
Giovanna Esposito Yussif (Museum of Impossible Forms)
-
Karen Watson & Jon Wakeman (East Street Arts, UK
-
Alina Mänttäri (Ateljeesäätiö / Finnish Artist Studio Foundation)
The contributors represent a diversity of perspectives on artist-led spaces and cultural regeneration including temporary spaces, artist work spaces, public art, community and citizen-led city planning.
Free entry – Registration.
Event will be held in English.
