Do you seek the gate?

Enter this salt encrusted land of chimeras and mythical beasts, join in their bloody feasts and witness an alchemical transformation. Salt mingles with plaster and wood, gathering itself into bodies and fragments of the cities that were once here. Echoing through the space we are engulfed in a great struggle of transformation while sculpted faces huddle together, sitting in stagnant pools while muttering their esoteric riddles. And at the heart stands a gate; alive and growing in its crystalline world locked out of time. Will you pass through?

There is beauty in becoming new.

Azariah’s work binds together the many meanings and associations carried by the enigmatic material of salt. Drawing on its historical, mythical and anecdotal associations he combines this with his fascination with mascarons, the sculpted faces that adorn our city’s buildings. Field recordings made at the Læsø Saltworks in Denmark fill the gallery, blended into a soundscape and alchemical fiction developed in collaboration with Felix Alexander Lybeck.

Azariah is a video and installation artist whose practice delves into memory, place and poetry, navigating myth to make sense of the world. His recent work investigates salt as material and manifestation of poetic meaning. This is viewed through the lens of alchemy, the crux of my research and methodology; it is both a deeply material and a profoundly spiritual practice, combining thoughts on the human soul with experimentation in the laboratory. It has become a language for thinking in substances and processes allowing him to critically reflect on his personal experiences. 

This exhibition concept was developed earlier this year during Azariah’s residency at Fabrikken, funded by the Suomen Kulttuurirahasto.
