Charles Esche

Charles Esche is a writer and curator based in Amsterdam and is developing the Three Ashes Foundation with members of transit.ro on land near Bucharest. For a number of years, through writing and exhibitions, he has proposed the concept of demodernising as a way for western Europeans to approach the challenge of decolonial thinking. He is a professor of contemporary art and curating at University of the Arts, London; adviser at Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht and a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam. He directed the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven 2004-24 and Rooseum in Malmö 2000-2004.

I hope to meet Finnish-based artists and curators and get to know the artistic and international institutional infrastructure better. I will also often be in my studio writing my PhD and editing a forthcoming book for Sternberg Press called Never There Yet about the condition of curating today. I also hope to travel a little in Finland to get beyond Helsinki.

Charles Esche’s residency is realised in collaboration with Frame Contemporary Art Finland.
