Learning Materials Lab: Surreal Picnic by Paula Zvane

The table has landed from the sky.

Date: 24.6.2026

Time: 15:30 & 18:15

Location: HIAP Gallery Augusta, Suomenlinna B28, 00190 Helsinki

On the day of HIAP Open Studios, artist Paula Zvane invites you to gather around a table set in the grass. Covered with a raw kombucha sheet that looks and feels remarkably like skin, the table becomes both sculpture and meeting place: a surface for sharing food, stories, materials, and myths.

As part of Paula‘s ongoing project Skin as Shelter, she will host an immersive gathering that explores how materials can carry stories and how mythology can help us create empathy and connection with the unknown. This workshop is an invitation to step into a surreal bird’s stomach. During the event, Paula will share the myths, stories, and folklore she has gathered and explored during her residency in Finland. It’s an exploration of how creating uncanny sculptures and alternative materials can spark deep empathy, bridge communities, and help us better understand the unknown.

Seaweed becomes hair, kombucha becomes skin, shit becomes castle, and materials become tools for imagining new relationships between humans, animals, and the landscapes we share.
The installation includes highly tactile bio-materials, sculptures, food elements, and storytelling. Participation is welcome at your own pace. Observing is as valid as tasting.
Edible Elements may contain wheat, soy, beans, tea, sugar, vinegar, seeds, egg, mushrooms, and pickles. Please consider any allergies before participating.
