Aistė Gaidilionytė & Kamilė Vasiliauskaitė
Aistė Gaidilionytė and Kamilė Vasiliauskaitė are a creative duo currently based in Vilnius, Lithuania. With a background in architecture, they are interested in the role of the architect as an activist and mediator. Their practice, based on new materialism, post-growth, and feminist spatial theories, is concerned with reclaiming material expertise and emphasises sensitive observation, research, and reuse of materials, as well as hands-on prototyping, particularly focusing on investigating and rethinking contemporary building materials.
At HIAP, we will be further researching the wood composites and how this invention, aimed to be sustainable, has transformed. These materials are tricky as they dominate today’s construction and waste sites, yet usually they are wrapped in laminated wood imitations and contain toxic resins, which prevent these materials from biodegrading. In addition, their production heavily affects the Nordic-Baltic forests. Leaning on the concept of material agency, will be expanding the understanding of wood composites, inspecting the leftovers and rethinking their storage, as well as using hands-on methods to come up with non-toxic ways to design objects or structures.
