Taru Elfving Appointed Programme Director of HIAP

HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme runs international artist residency studios in the Cable Factory and Suomenlinna in Helsinki. The board of HIAP has now appointed curator Taru Elfving as its new programme director. A total of 24 candidates applied for the post by the end of the open application process. Taru Elfving will start in the new position on 19 March 2012.

Taru Elfving has more than 10 years of international experience as curator of contemporary art, tutor and freelance writer. In 2009–2011 she was artistic director and curator of the CAA Contemporary Art Archipelago project, which was part of the Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture programme. Elfving holds an MA in art history from Turku University and a PhD in visual culture from Goldsmiths College (University of London).

The new position of programme director is part of HIAP’s strategy, which places emphasis on artistic expertise, active development of projects, audience work and broad-based collaboration within the arts. The role of the programme director will include building a distinctive profile for the residency programme as well as strategic content planning.

“HIAP has become an important meeting place for Finnish and international art in Helsinki. The particular strengths of the residency programme are in building networks for artists and curators as well as in supporting, making visible and critically contextualising a wide variety of artistic processes. My mission is to further develop these activities while focusing on urgent challenges such as multiculturalism, sustainable development and the changing roles of art in the society.” (Taru Elfving)

“Taru Elfving’s expertise in critical content, her curating experience and international contacts will be a superb complement to the professional staff at HIAP. I believe that the post at HIAP will allow her to exercise her strengths as well as to introduce new perspectives into our operations.” (Pilvi Kalhama, Chairperson of HIAP Board)

“HIAP has expanded the scope of its activities vigorously in recent years. From the beginning of this year, we have redistributed responsibilities within our organization to reflect the different areas of our operations. With the programme director now focusing on artistic questions, the managing director will be able to concentrate on strategy and management as well as the development of interest group relations and funding. On the other hand, we also do a lot of creative teamwork and here Taru’s dialogical and open approach will be a great asset.” (Jaakko Rustanius, Director of HIAP)
