Exchange Programmes
HIAP has several international exchange residency programmes that enables Finnish artists and curators to have a residency period abroad as well as offers residencies in Finland for artists and curators worldwide. Exchange agreements are developed on a long-term and reciprocal basis with several city councils, residency centres, cultural organisations, art museums and galleries worldwide. The aim of the exchanges is to offer dialogue, collaboration and networking opportunities and to foster mutually beneficial cultural interaction between the participating countries and regions.
Composer Residency: Tokyo-Finland Exchange
HIAP, Tokyo Wonder Site, Sibelius Academy and the Finnish Institute in Japan join forces to start Tokyo-Finland Exchange Residency Programme in Autumn 2011.
Tokyo Wonder Site is an art center dedicated to the generation and promotion of new art and culture from the heart of Tokyo. Tokyo-Finland Exchange Residency Programme is part of a larger effort to gain mutual understanding of differing cultural environments, and consider a new, shared culture together.
Sibelius Academy offers the selected artist a place in Academy’s series of lectures enabling the artist to present the current project. The artist has also an opportunity to meet Academy’s professionals and students in Composition and thus create contacts with Finnish experts in the music field.
Changing Places: Helsinki-Russia Exchange Programme
Changing Places is a HIAP exchange programme that consists of artist and curatorial residencies in Helsinki and Russia. Programme includes exhibition activities in Cable Gallery and other HIAP partner institutions as well as public discussions and seminars. Different activity possibilities in the frame of Changing Places programme are discussed with and agreed on individually with each artist and curator.
The programme aims to create long-term collaboration networks between Helsinki and different Russian cities. The core of the programme is to strengthen the communication and collaboration in various ways between professionals in the field on visual art as well as to offer possibilities in joint projects for Finnish and Russian artists and curators. The programme enables the positioning of current questions in Finnish and Russian contemporary art in an international context.
In 2010 and 2011 HIAP was host to TOKAMAK, an intensive summer programme for Russian and international artists lead by Emily Newman. During the first summer, programme concentrated on group critique and the discussion of past works. The summer of 2011 prorgramme experimented more adventurously with a program aimed at creating new strategies for group collaborations. Having identified and experimented with a range of approaches emphasizing mutual support and productivity, participants dedicated their time at HIAP's idyllic Suomenlinna HQ to the production of new work. The programme has been extremely fruitful in terms of developing productive relationships inside our practices and fostering a sense of critical distance from our home bases.
Art students from Smolny College, Saint Petersburg, and Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, took part in he Summer Workshop thst was held by Emily Newman in HIAP Suomenlinna in the frame of Changing Places programme.
