Changing Places

The newest generation of young Russian artists is invited to Helsinki as part of HIAP's Changing Places Program. Post-communist scepticism towards any totalizing, all-encompassing system in times of market absolutism is typical of the artistic practice of the invited artists-in-residence. In part this scepticism derives from two decades of high hopes for capitalism gone sour. Yet the aversion to ideological dogma, now in the form of pre-packaged market solutions, is instilled by the experience of failed communism. For the invited artists-in-residence, poetics are an essential element of their practice. Poetics and politics are interwoven in such a way as to leave space for imagination, for new interpretations to arise.

This new program is supported by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.
