Media artist and sculptor Jang-Won Lee (1974, Seoul) presents a solo show “sunTracer project - Helsinki” at Harakka Kasematti in Helsinki. The exhibition is the latest installation of a project that has been developed over several years at various locations world-wide. As the title suggests, the project is focused on tracing the movements of the Sun with hardware and software designed and built by the artist himself.

In his exhibition Jang-Won Lee connects two sunTracer devices to a virtual dialogue over the internet. The sunTracers are situated at different locations in Helsinki, one at the Harakka Island with its very special environment and natural conservation areas, and the other at the artist’s studio in the industrial surroundings of the Cable Factory. The devices will register the procession of the Sun related to the coordinates of their locations and in doing so will construct a constantly evolving mental stereo image of Helsinki and the spheres of its inhabitants.

In many cultures the Sun has traditionally been associated with and used as a symbol of, for example, life, strength, deity, eternity, hope, resurrection and even destruction. Jang-Won Lee’s work - at the colligation of art and technology and of transience and infinity - recreates, reinvents and updates the symbolism of the Sun to the present.

The exhibition also presents installations the artist has developed during his residency in Helsinki, depicting his perception of time and space.

During his career Jang-Won Lee has worked with projects at Younglin Instrument R&D Center and KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) and has collaborated with researches from various fields of science.

Jang-Won Lee participates in the HIAP artist’s residency programme at Cable Factory, Helsinki, Finland during March - May 2006. His residency is organized within an ongoing exchange program between HIAP and the National Art Studio of Korea.
