Sasha Kurmaz (b. 1986, Kyiv, Ukraine), works with photography, video, public intervention and performance. Though direct, Sasha's work is open to interpretation and characterized by extreme simplicity of execution. He analyzes social interrelationships in both poetic and political ways. He has participated in international group exhibitions and festivals including Architekturzentrum Wien 2014 (Austria), Saatchi Gallery 2015 (UK), C/O Berlin 2016 (Germany), PinchukArtCentre 2016 (Ukraine) and Arsenał Gallery 2017 (Poland). His work has been published in international magazines such as FOAM, Krytyka Polityczna, Liberation, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Vice and YET.

For his residency at HIAP, Sasha aims to develop a series of tactical interventions in the social and physical structure of Helsinki that can trigger a re-thinking of the urban space by those who engage with it. The final form of the project will depend on the results of his research and preliminary analysis of the local context in Helsinki, but at this stage he envisions it as a book consisting of his personal photo archive and the documentation of the new works he plans to create during the residence.
