Sam Smith

Sam Smith (b. 1980)

Sam Smith is a video and installation artist whose practice integrates sculptural construction and moving image in an artistic critique of cinema’s apparatus. Interrogating the formal structure of screen-space his work examines montage, filmic narrative and the camera instrument.

Sam Smith lives and works between Berlin, Germany and Sydney, Australia.

Sam Smith is supported by Arts NSW’s NSW Artists’ Grant Scheme, a funding program administered by the National Association of the Visual Arts on behalf of the NSW Government.

During his time at HIAP Smith will research and develop work that looks at the relationship between the camera lens and the cinema frame, specifically in relation to the tension between two- and three- dimensional space in video and film. Through reducing cinematic language to its most basic, the artist intends to form statements on composition, optics, movement, and montage.
