Rebecca Baumann (b.1983) is an Australian visual artist living and working in Perth. Through a formal and conceptual exploration of materials, Baumann’s recent works have interrogated ideas around colour, light and time. Often kinetic and ephemeral in nature, her sculptures, installations and performances seek to affect the audience through their experiential, momentary and emotive qualities.

Light is capable of transforming spatial environments – an intangible material which can be manipulated and sculpted. During her three-month residency at HIAP, Baumann will research new works which further develop the use of light as an activation device in her practice. She will engage in material exploration, testing how light can be spatially manipulated, reflected off, and transferred through different materials. As part of her research she will also travel to the Finnish Laplands to experience the natural phenomena of Aurora Borealis.

Baumann’s recent exhibitions include: New Romance, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2015); HERE&NOW15, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Perth (2015); Color Fields, MassArt Bakalar & Paine Galleries, Boston (2015); Once More With Feeling (solo), Starkwhite, Auckland (2014); Encounters, Art Basel Hong Kong (2014); Contemporary Australia: Women, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2012); Primavera 2011, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2011), and NEW11, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2011).
