Ali MacGilp

Ali MacGilp (b. 1978) Britain

Founded in 2008, norn are a curatorial collective, comprising Ali MacGilp & Cassandra Needham (born 1976, British). Collective norn presents exhibitions and events that articulate critically-engaged and socio-political concepts. Working across disciplines, norn strives to put collaboration at the heart of its projects and curatorial ethos. In her independent curatorial practice MacGilp is interested in artists working in the medium of installation, performance and video, particularly from the Middle East and post-Socialist countries. She is attracted to site-specific and political practices that deal with issues around feminism or immigration, as well as archive and research-based practices.

During her time in Helsinki she will be carrying out research into the Finnish art scene, making studio visits and building relationships with artists and cultural organisations and art spaces with a view to collaborating on future projects. Currently norn are developing two proposals for international exhibitions and seek to include Finnish artists. MacGilp will organise a Videojamit at the close of the residency period, including video works from UK and Finnish artists.
